Mousa Broch survives as the tallest and most complete Iron Age broch in Scotland, an almost intact double-walled drystone tower standing to roughly thirteen meters with its internal stair largely preserved. It is a scheduled monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The broch stands in open ground on the uninhabited island of Mousa and is freely accessible to visitors who arrange boat transport to reach it.
About Mousa Broch
Iron Age communities in Shetland built Mousa Broch around the first century BCE as a fortified round tower, likely serving both defense and habitation. Its massive drystone walls enclosed a central courtyard reached by an internal staircase. Norse sagas later recorded the broch as a refuge for fugitives, including eloping couples, reflecting its continued use into the Viking Age.
