The site preserves the excavated remains of a Byzantine monastery and basilica with extensive mosaic floors, over which a modern memorial church has been built to shelter and display the ancient foundations and mosaics, alongside the modern Serpentine Cross sculpture. It is administered by the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, the Franciscan custodial body for Christian holy sites in the region. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Mount Nebo
Mount Nebo has long been venerated as the site from which, according to the Hebrew Bible, Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death. Byzantine Christians built a memorial church and monastery on the summit by the fourth century to commemorate the tradition. The site became an important early pilgrimage destination and a center of monastic life.
