Major General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben used Mount Gulian as headquarters in 1783 while the Continental Army waited near Newburgh for peace and settlement of its grievances. Here officers developed the Society of the Cincinnati, a hereditary veterans' organization intended to preserve fellowship and aid members' families. The site reflects both the army's achievement and its anxiety over unpaid wages and uncertain civilian support.
