HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Mount Grace Priory, North Yorkshire.
The ruins of the Carthusian priory survive, including the church, chapter house, and cloister ranges, with one cell reconstructed to show a monk's living quarters and walled garden, and a later Jacobean manor house built onto the site. English Heritage manages the priory in partnership with the National Trust, which owns the manor house, and the site holds scheduled monument status. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Mount Grace Priory, North Yorkshire
Mount Grace Priory was founded in 1398 by Thomas Holland, Duke of Surrey, as a Carthusian charterhouse, one of only a handful built in medieval England. Its monks lived in solitary cells arranged around a great cloister, following the order's strict rule of silence and individual prayer. The priory was suppressed in 1539 during the dissolution of the monasteries.
