HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Morgan Lewis Windmill.
The windmill preserves its original eighteenth century stone tower along with a substantially restored set of sails, wind shaft, and internal grinding machinery, making it one of the few sugar windmills in the Caribbean with an intact working mechanism. It is owned and maintained by the Barbados National Trust. The mill is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Morgan Lewis Windmill
Morgan Lewis Windmill was built in the eighteenth century on a Barbados sugar plantation to crush cane using wind power. Enslaved laborers and later free workers operated it as part of the island's sugar economy, one of hundreds of mills across Barbados. It continued grinding cane into the twentieth century, among the last working sugar windmills.
