Loyalist partisan James Moody conducted daring raids in and around Sussex County, New Jersey, targeting officials, mails, prisoners, and military supplies. Newton contained stores overseen by assistant quartermaster Thomas Anderson and therefore attracted attention. Moody's small parties relied on secrecy, local supporters, disguises, and rapid movement through contested territory. American detachments also used Newton during the 1779 Sullivan campaign. The marker recalls a shadow war of intelligence, kidnapping, theft, and retaliation that continued behind the main armies' lines.
