HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Monument to the Great Fire of London, City of London.
The Monument survives as its original Portland stone Doric column, topped with a gilded urn of flames, along with an internal spiral staircase leading to a viewing platform. It is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation and is a Grade I listed building. The Monument is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with visitors able to climb to the top.
About Monument to the Great Fire of London, City of London
The Monument was built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666, under the design of Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke. Its height marks the distance to the bakery on Pudding Lane where the fire began. Hooke also used its hollow shaft for scientific experiments, including studies of gravity and pendulum motion.
