Montgomery functioned as an early trade, agricultural, and civic center for the Piney Woods region of what became Montgomery County, serving as a supply and market town for surrounding farms and plantations and, for a time after its 1837 founding, as an important local seat of commerce and governance in the young Republic of Texas. The town's practical economy revolved around general mercantile trade, cotton and timber-related commerce, churches, schools, and the professional services typical of an early county town, drawing settlers and merchants who built the wood-frame homes and storefronts that still line its historic streets. Montgomery holds particular significance as the home of Sarah Bradley Dodson, a local resident credited with designing and sewing an early tricolor flag flown by Texas volunteers in late 1835, a design often cited as an antecedent to the state's later official flag. As county government and rail lines shifted toward nearby towns in the later nineteenth century, Montgomery's role as a primary trade hub diminished, and it settled into a quieter existence as a small agricultural community. Today Montgomery is preserved and promoted as a historic townsite, known for its well-preserved nineteenth-century homes, antique shops, boutiques, and heritage tourism; its historic district and individual structures are documented and marked by Texas Historical Commission and local historical society markers celebrating the town's founding-era and flag history.
