Montacute House survives as a largely intact Elizabethan mansion of golden Ham stone, retaining its original facade, its Long Gallery, and much of its historic interior plasterwork and paneling. The house and its gardens are owned and managed by the National Trust. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, typically during the visitor season.
About Montacute House, Somerset
Built in the 1590s for Sir Edward Phelips, a lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons, as a grand Elizabethan prodigy house. Constructed of Ham Hill stone, it displayed the wealth and status of a rising gentry family. It remained a Phelips family seat for centuries, exemplifying Elizabethan architectural ambition.
