The fortified rock preserves its walled lower town of stone houses, narrow lanes, and Byzantine and later churches, including the church of Christos Elkomenos, while the upper town retains ruined fortifications, cisterns, and the shell of the Hagia Sophia church. The site is protected as an archaeological and monument zone under the Greek Ministry of Culture, with many lower-town buildings in private ownership. It is freely accessible on foot, with the upper town reached by a steep path through the fortifications.
About Monemvasia
Monemvasia was founded in the sixth century by Byzantine Greeks seeking refuge from invasions on a fortified rock connected to the mainland by a single causeway. It grew into a major Byzantine trading port and naval base, later passing between Venetian and Ottoman control. The town became famous for exporting malmsey wine throughout medieval Europe.
