HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Monastery of San Francisco.

The monastery preserves its baroque church, cloisters decorated with Sevillian tiles, a historic library, and catacombs containing human remains, largely intact from the colonial period despite earthquake damage and rebuilding over time. It is administered by the Franciscan order and forms part of the Historic Centre of Lima World Heritage Site. It remains partly an active religious house and is open to the public on a guided, ticketed basis.

About Monastery of San Francisco

Franciscan friars founded the Monastery of San Francisco in Lima in the sixteenth century as a mission base in Peru. The complex included a church, cloisters, and a large library, and its crypts held the remains of thousands of colonial-era residents. The monastery served as a center of Franciscan learning and religious life in South America.
