HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Monastery of Oseira.

The monastery preserves its Romanesque and Gothic church, cloisters, and monumental staircase, known locally as the Escorial of Galicia, though the community was suppressed and its buildings fell into partial ruin before monks returned in the twentieth century. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural belonging to the Cistercian order, which maintains an active community there. The monastery is open to visitors on guided tours.

About Monastery of Oseira

The Monastery of Oseira was founded in 1137 under the patronage of King Alfonso VII of Castile and León as a house of the Cistercian order. Monks built it in Romanesque and later Gothic style, developing it into one of the largest monastic complexes in Galicia. It became known as the Escorial of Galicia for the scale of its buildings.
