HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Monastery of Las Huelgas.
The royal Cistercian monastery preserves its Gothic church, cloisters, chapter house, and the tombs of medieval Castilian monarchs. It remains an active community of Cistercian nuns and is administered by Patrimonio Nacional, the Spanish crown heritage agency. Visits to most of the monastic complex are by guided tour only, while the church may be open for worship.
About Monastery of Las Huelgas
King Alfonso VIII of Castile and Queen Eleanor of England founded the Monastery of Las Huelgas near Burgos in 1187 as a Cistercian convent for women of the nobility. It served as a royal pantheon, housing the tombs of numerous Castilian kings and queens. Its abbesses held extraordinary ecclesiastical authority, answering directly to the pope rather than local bishops.
