HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Monasterboice Round Tower & High Crosses.
Monasterboice preserves a complete round tower, though missing its original conical cap, along with two elaborately carved high crosses, including Muiredach's Cross, one of the finest surviving examples in Ireland, plus a smaller cross and the ruins of two later medieval churches, all within the old monastic graveyard. The site is in the care of the Office of Public Works as a national monument. It stands in open ground and is freely accessible to the public.
About Monasterboice Round Tower & High Crosses
Monasterboice was founded as a monastery, traditionally by Saint Buite, around the late fifth or early sixth century. It became renowned for its carved high crosses, including Muiredach's Cross, and for its round tower, used for refuge and as a bell tower. It served as a center of monastic learning until eclipsed by Mellifont Abbey in the twelfth century.
