HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Modica.

The historic center retains its dense Baroque townscape rebuilt in golden limestone after the 1693 earthquake, including the monumental stairway and facade of the Duomo di San Giorgio and the church of San Pietro, both substantially original eighteenth century fabric. Modica forms part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, a World Heritage Site, under municipal and diocesan stewardship. The town and its churches are freely open to visitors.

About Modica

Modica began as a Sicel settlement in eastern Sicily and grew into the Roman town of Motyca. During the Middle Ages it became the seat of the County of Modica, a powerful feudal domain held successively by the Chiaramonte and Cabrera families. The county seat made Modica a major center of feudal administration and Sicilian Baroque architecture.
