HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Modena Cathedral & Torre Civica.
The site preserves the largely original twelfth century Romanesque cathedral, built by the architect Lanfranco with sculpture by Wiligelmo, and its freestanding campanile known as the Ghirlandina tower. The cathedral is overseen by the Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola and the tower by the municipality, together forming part of a World Heritage Site with the adjoining piazza. The cathedral is an active place of worship open to visitors, and the tower is open on a ticketed basis.
About Modena Cathedral & Torre Civica
Modena Cathedral was built beginning in 1099 under the direction of the architect Lanfranco to house the relics of Saint Geminianus, patron saint of the city. Its sculptor Wiligelmo carved biblical reliefs on the facade, and the adjoining Torre Civica served as bell tower and watchtower. Together they symbolized Modena's communal identity and Romanesque art.
