Its inscription places the battle about 1.5 miles east and gives May 26, 1780, differing from other June accounts. The original site and date conflict remain under review. About Mobley’s / Gibson’s Meeting House Battle Site
Mobley's or Gibson's Meeting House was associated with a Patriot attack on a Loyalist gathering in 1780. The encounter belongs to the struggle for control of South Carolina's interior after Charleston fell. A meeting place became part of a military landscape of local allegiances and militia action.
A September 2020 photograph records Fairfield County Historical Society's 1969 Mobley's Meeting House panel, numbered 20-10. Its inscription places the battle 1.5 miles east of the sign. The panel does not identify a surviving meetinghouse. The battle date, original site and remains, protection and current marker care need verification.
History happened here at Mobley’s / Gibson’s Meeting House Battle Site
Patriot militia attacked Loyalists gathered near the meeting house in the Little River area. The action occurred as local forces reorganized and contested British influence following the fall of Charleston. Accounts place it in late spring or early summer 1780 but disagree over the precise date.
The encounter shows how familiar community gathering places could become targets during civil conflict. Later commemorative accounts preserved the meeting-house name while leaving questions about the building and terrain. Further proofing should resolve the date and parcel before adding detailed descriptions of the attack's positions or surviving remains.
