The mission preserves its stone-vaulted Baroque church, built of volcanic rock and considered one of the best-preserved of the Jesuit-era Baja California missions, along with remnants of its associated irrigation works and orchard terraces. It functions as a protected historic monument under Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia and remains an active Catholic parish church. It is freely accessible to visitors.
About Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó
The Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó was founded by Jesuit missionaries in the late seventeenth century to evangelize the indigenous Cochimí people of Baja California. Its stone church was completed in the eighteenth century. The mission served as a center of Spanish colonization and religious conversion until the Jesuits were expelled from New Spain in 1767.
