HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Misión Nuestra Señora del Pilar y Santiago de Cocóspera.
The site preserves the roofless adobe ruins of the mission church, including portions of its facade and side walls, with much of the original structure eroded or collapsed over time and no significant reconstruction undertaken. It falls under the protection of Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible.
About Misión Nuestra Señora del Pilar y Santiago de Cocóspera
Jesuit missionaries under Eusebio Kino founded a mission at Cocóspera in the late seventeenth century to evangelize the local O'odham people of Sonora. Apache raids repeatedly damaged the settlement, and Franciscans rebuilt its church after Jesuit expulsion in 1767, continuing as a frontier mission into the early nineteenth century. It anchored Spain's mission chain in the region.
