The site preserves the ruined stone walls and facade of the Franciscan mission church of San Bernardo along with remnants of the adjoining presidio fortification, much of the complex reduced to partial walls and foundations. It is under the custodianship of Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, and forms part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a World Heritage Site. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible.

About Misión de San Bernardo & Presidio, Guerrero (Camino Real de Tierra Adentro)

Misión de San Bernardo was founded in the early eighteenth century as part of the San Juan Bautista mission and presidio complex, built by Spanish Franciscans and soldiers near a Rio Grande crossing. It lay along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro linking Mexico City to the northern frontier. The complex became a staging point for Spanish expeditions into Texas.
