HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Concho.

The mission preserves its stone church building, restored and rebuilt following earthquake damage over its history, along with surviving portions of the original colonial era walls, as the first Jesuit mission church in the Californias. It is maintained under the Catholic Diocese as an active parish church. It remains an active place of worship open to visitors.

About Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Concho

Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto was founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionary Juan María de Salvatierra, becoming the first permanent Spanish mission in the Californias. It served as the administrative and spiritual headquarters from which Jesuit and later Franciscan missionaries organized the chain of missions extending through Baja and Alta California. It anchored Spain's colonization.
