HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Melrose Abbey.
Melrose Abbey survives as an extensive roofless ruin of red sandstone, retaining much of its church including sections of the nave, choir, and transepts along with elaborate tracery and carved details, though its roof and many upper walls are long lost. It is a scheduled monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The abbey ruins are open to visitors on a ticketed basis.
About Melrose Abbey
King David I of Scotland founded Melrose Abbey in 1136 for Cistercian monks from Rievaulx, making it one of the first Cistercian houses in Scotland. The abbey grew into a wealthy center of sheep farming and manuscript production. It was repeatedly damaged during Anglo-Scottish border wars, including raids by English forces in the fourteenth century, and rebuilt each time.
