HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Mellifont Abbey.

The abbey preserves substantial ruins of its Cistercian church, octagonal lavabo, and chapter house in cut stone, standing roofless amid open grounds. It is a national monument in state care, managed by the Office of Public Works. It is freely accessible to the public.

About Mellifont Abbey

Mellifont Abbey was founded in 1142 by St Malachy as the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, staffed by monks from Bernard of Clairvaux's order. It became a mother house for later Cistercian foundations in Ireland and helped reform Irish monastic practice. Dissolved in the sixteenth century, the abbey later gave its name to the 1603 Treaty of Mellifont.
