HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Medina of Tunis.

The medina of Tunis preserves an extensive historic urban fabric of narrow lanes, souks, and courtyard houses, along with the Zitouna Mosque and numerous other mosques, madrasas, and palaces dating from its medieval and Ottoman-era growth. It is a World Heritage Site, with preservation overseen by Tunisian heritage authorities and the Association de Sauvegarde de la Medina. The medina remains a lived-in urban quarter, freely open and accessible to the public.

About Medina of Tunis

The Medina of Tunis grew up around the Zaytuna Mosque, founded in the seventh century after the Arab conquest, becoming the walled historic core of the city. It flourished as a center of trade, crafts, and Islamic scholarship under successive dynasties. Its dense network of souks, mosques, and mansions made it one of the Arab world's most important towns.
