HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Medina of Sousse & Ribat of Sousse.

The Ribat of Sousse preserves its ninth-century square fortress with corner towers and a watchtower, and the Medina retains its walled perimeter, the Great Mosque, and the Kasbah, all original fabric rather than reconstruction. The Medina of Sousse is a World Heritage Site, protected under Tunisian heritage law and cared for by the national heritage institute. The ribat, kasbah, and mosque are open on a ticketed basis, while the medina's streets remain freely accessible as a living quarter.

About Medina of Sousse & Ribat of Sousse

The coastal town of Sousse was fortified under early Islamic rule from the eighth century, with its ribat, a fortified monastery for religious warriors, completed in the early ninth century. The ribat combined coastal defense with religious retreat, watching the Mediterranean against raiders. Sousse's walled medina grew around it as a major port of Aghlabid Ifriqiya.
