Archibald McClean was a surveyor, county official, and committed Patriot in York, Pennsylvania. When the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia after the British advance in 1777, York became the national capital until June 1778. Local tradition associates McClean's house with the United States Treasury during this emergency. Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation in York, struggled to finance the army, and received news of the victory at Saratoga and the French alliance. The house site represents the improvised offices and private spaces that sustained a government operating under wartime pressure.
