The mausoleum's massive circular brick and concrete core survives, though its marble facing, statuary, and the obelisks that once flanked its entrance were removed or relocated centuries ago, leaving an unfaced ruin recently made accessible again. It is owned by the city of Rome and managed by Roma Capitale's cultural heritage authorities. The site can be visited by guided, ticketed tour.

The Mausoleum of Augustus was built beginning around 28 BCE as a monumental circular tomb for Augustus and his dynasty. It held the ashes of Augustus, his wife Livia, and other members of the Julio-Claudian house. In the Middle Ages and later it was repurposed as a fortress, a garden, and an arena.
