HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Mausoleo di Galla Placidia.

The small cruciform brick mausoleum survives essentially intact, with its original fifth century interior mosaics, marble-veneered lower walls, and three sarcophagi still in place, making it one of the best preserved early Christian monuments in Ravenna. It is managed by the Opera di Religione della Diocesi di Ravenna and forms part of the Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna World Heritage Site. Access is by timed, ticketed entry due to the fragility of the interior.

About Mausoleo di Galla Placidia

The mausoleum was built in Ravenna in the mid-fifth century and traditionally associated with the Roman empress Galla Placidia, though she was actually buried elsewhere. It was built near the church of Santa Croce and decorated with elaborate mosaics on a deep blue ground. The building exemplifies early Christian architecture and mosaic art in the late Roman West.
