About Matthew Gaines
This site commemorates Matthew Gaines, a formerly enslaved man who settled in the Burton area after the Civil War and became a Baptist preacher. He was elected to the Texas Senate during Reconstruction in 1869, representing Washington County. Gaines advocated for public education and the civil rights of freedpeople as an early Black legislator.
