HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Matmata Troglodyte Dwellings.
The site preserves underground pit dwellings carved into the soft local rock, with rooms, storage chambers, and stables arranged around sunken open courtyards, some still inhabited by local families and others converted into guesthouses or cafes. The dwellings are held in private and family ownership rather than under any single heritage authority. Several pit dwellings are open informally to visitors for a small fee paid to the household.
About Matmata Troglodyte Dwellings
Berber communities in southern Tunisia carved these underground pit dwellings into soft sandstone over several centuries to shelter families and livestock from extreme heat. Each home was built around a central courtyard dug below ground level, with rooms tunneled into its sides. The style reflected an Amazigh tradition of troglodyte architecture adapted to the desert climate.
