HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Massa Marittima.

The historic center retains its medieval cathedral of San Cerbone, the Palazzo del Comune and other civic palaces on the Piazza Garibaldi, and sections of the town walls and fortifications. The monuments are held largely in municipal and ecclesiastical ownership. The town is an inhabited settlement whose streets, piazza, and cathedral are freely accessible, with the cathedral remaining an active place of worship.

About Massa Marittima

Massa Marittima grew as a hill town in Tuscany that had been a center of silver and copper mining since Etruscan times. As a comune, it built its cathedral, the Duomo di San Cerbone, in the thirteenth century and issued one of Europe's earliest mining codes in the early fourteenth century. Its wealth and government rested on the metal mines.
