The library preserves its original early eighteenth century building and interior, including its dark oak bookcases, wired alcoves once used to lock in readers with rare volumes, and much of its historic book collection. It is governed by an independent charitable trust rather than a government department. The library is open to the public on a paid admission basis.
About Marsh's Library
Marsh's Library was founded by Archbishop Narcissus Marsh and opened in 1707 as Ireland's first public library, beside St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. Designed by Sir William Robinson, it included caged alcoves where readers could be locked in with rare books to deter theft. The library served scholars and clergy as a center of learning in early modern Dublin.
