George Washington repeatedly passed through Upper Marlborough on the principal road between Virginia and the northern colonies. He stopped here as a Virginia militia colonel in 1756, lodged on August 31, 1774, while traveling to the First Continental Congress, and returned in May 1775 on his way to the Second Continental Congress. That second journey carried him toward the meeting at which Thomas Johnson nominated him to command the army of the united colonies on June 15. Washington's appearances in military uniform helped advertise his willingness to serve and his experience from the French and Indian War. Later visits, including one as president in 1793, made the town a recurring waypoint across the arc of his public career.

Washington's presence also reveals how eighteenth-century public life depended upon private houses, taverns, and county roads. Travel was slow, hospitality carried political meaning, and a presidential or congressional journey became a sequence of local encounters. Later commemoration emphasized Washington, but the visit also depended on hosts, servants, enslaved laborers, militia escorts, tradespeople, and residents whose work made the reception possible.
