Margaret Moffette Lea, wife of Sam Houston, lived from 1819 to 1867, and her mother, Nancy Moffette Lea, lived from 1780 to 1864, both associated with this site in Independence, Texas. Contemporaries described them as women of character, culture, and devotion to family and church. Their influence helped shape Sam Houston's career and Texas history.
