About Mangalore Siege Fort Site (1783–1784)
Mangalore’s siege of 1783–1784 formed part of the Second Anglo-Mysore War, fought during the wider international conflict of the American Revolution. British troops faced Tipu Sultan’s forces after taking the port. The siege fort’s footprint remains unresolved; nearby Sultan Battery is a separate, later military heritage reference.
The mapped point represents Sultan Battery at Boloor, a surviving watchtower dated to 1784 by official tourism sources. No intact siege works or exact fort boundary have been verified for this entry.
History happened here at Mangalore Siege Fort Site (1783–1784)
British forces captured Mangalore in March 1783 during an offensive on India’s western coast. Tipu Sultan’s return reversed the situation and placed British positions under siege. The military struggle was connected to a wider war involving Britain, Mysore, and French interests rather than a direct campaign for American independence on Indian ground.
The siege continued into 1784 before the Treaty of Mangalore ended the war in March. Accounts differ over the precise starting date, so the broader chronology is retained here. Sultan Battery’s later construction belongs to another phase of Tipu Sultan’s defenses and should not be identified as the besieged fort without evidence.
