HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Maktar (Mactaris).

Maktar preserves notable Roman and Byzantine ruins including a forum, an arch, a theater, baths, basilicas, and a Numidian mausoleum, along with an on-site museum, with the remains largely unreconstructed ruins in open ground. The site is administered by the Tunisian Institut National du Patrimoine. It is an archaeological park open to visitors on a ticketed basis.

About Maktar (Mactaris)

Maktar, ancient Mactaris, began as a Numidian town in the Tunisian high plains before falling under Carthaginian and then Roman influence. Rome made it a colonia in the late first century CE, and it flourished as an agricultural market center for the surrounding grain-growing region. It preserved monuments spanning Punic, Numidian, and Roman rule.
