HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Maison Bonaparte.

The house retains its eighteenth-century structure and a collection of period furnishings, portraits, and Bonaparte family memorabilia, including the room traditionally identified as Napoleon's birthplace, though the interior was significantly refurbished after Corsican rebels damaged the house in the 1790s. It is owned by the French state and operated as a national museum under the Ministry of Culture. The house is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Maison Bonaparte

The Bonaparte family occupied this house in Ajaccio, Corsica, through much of the eighteenth century, and Napoleon Bonaparte was born there in 1769. Carlo Buonaparte, Napoleon's father, raised his large family within its rooms before the future emperor left for schooling and a military career in France. The house later drew visitors honoring Napoleon's rise.
