HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Maeshowe Chambered Cairn.
Maeshowe preserves its original Neolithic corbelled stone chamber, entrance passage, and three side cells beneath a grass-covered mound, with runic inscriptions carved into the walls by later Norse visitors. It is cared for by Historic Environment Scotland as part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. Access is by guided tour only, owing to the small size of the interior chamber.
About Maeshowe Chambered Cairn
Maeshowe was built around 2800 BCE on Orkney as a Neolithic passage grave covering a central chamber and side cells. Its passage aligns with the setting sun at the winter solstice. Norse raiders broke into the mound in the twelfth century and left runic graffiti, and the tomb was among the finest works of Neolithic architecture in Europe.
