The site preserves the sixth century Madaba Map, a large Byzantine floor mosaic depicting the Holy Land, set within the active Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, along with other mosaic collections displayed in local museums and churches around the town. The church is maintained by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, with the wider archaeological remains overseen by Jordan's Department of Antiquities. About Madaba & the Madaba Mosaic Map
The Madaba Mosaic Map was laid as the floor of a Byzantine church in Madaba around the sixth century, depicting Jerusalem and other biblical sites across the Holy Land. It served worshippers and pilgrims as both a devotional image and a practical guide to sacred geography. The map provided the oldest known cartographic depiction of the region for Christian pilgrimage.
