HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lugo Roman Walls.
The walls survive as a complete, unbroken circuit of late Roman fortification nearly two miles in length, with numerous projecting towers and several gates, making them among the best preserved Roman town walls in existence. They form a World Heritage Site and are maintained by the municipal council of Lugo. The wall walk itself is freely accessible to the public at all times.
About Lugo Roman Walls
The walls of Lugo were built by the Romans in the late third century to defend Lucus Augusti, a provincial capital in Gallaecia. Nearly two kilometers long, they formed a complete defensive circuit reinforced with dozens of semicircular towers. They protected the city through the decline of Roman rule and the subsequent Suebic and Visigothic periods.
