HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lucca City Walls.

The Renaissance-era ramparts encircling the old town survive essentially complete, with their brick and earthen bastions, gates, and the tree-lined promenade atop the walls all intact rather than reconstructed. The walls and the surrounding parkland are maintained by the Comune di Lucca, the municipal government. They are freely accessible at all times as a public park, open to walking, cycling, and pedestrian use.

About Lucca City Walls

Lucca's rulers replaced the city's medieval walls with a new fortified circuit beginning in the sixteenth century, built with earthen ramparts and bastions to withstand artillery. The walls encircled the city so completely that Lucca was never taken by siege after their completion. In the nineteenth century the ramparts were replanted as a tree-lined promenade.
