The Elizabethan house survives substantially in its original form, with much of its exterior stonework, state rooms, and library collections intact, alongside later Victorian interior remodeling. It remains in private ownership of the Marquess of Bath and the Longleat Estate. The house and its grounds, including the safari park, are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Longleat House, Wiltshire
Sir John Thynne built Longleat House in Wiltshire in the 1570s and 1580s as a grand Elizabethan country residence, replacing an earlier priory site. Its architecture, attributed largely to Robert Smythson, became a model for the prodigy houses built by ambitious Elizabethan courtiers. It remained the seat of the Thynne family, later marquesses of Bath, for centuries.
