About Lockhart Plantation
Dr. John W. Lockhart, a physician in Chappell Hill, built the plantation house in 1850 from hand-cut cedar and black walnut. He frequently hosted Sam Houston there, and the 1,000-acre estate was self-sufficient, supporting its own blacksmith shop, cotton gin, and store. The plantation reflected the agricultural economy and social life of antebellum Texas.

Home built 1850 by Dr. John W. Lockhart, Chappell Hill physician and frequent host of Sam Houston. House is of cedar and black walnut hand-cut on rich 1,000-acre place that had its own blacksmith shop, cotton gin, store, other facilities.
