HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lixus.

The site preserves substantial Roman and earlier ruins including a hilltop acropolis, temple foundations, an amphitheater, a theater, baths, and remains of garum salting factories near the Loukkos river, with earlier Phoenician and Mauretanian occupation layers beneath, and much of the standing fabric is fragmentary rather than reconstructed. It is an archaeological park under Moroccan state authority through the Ministry of Culture. The ruins lie in open ground and are freely or lightly ticketed for public visits.

About Lixus

Lixus was founded as a Phoenician trading settlement on the Atlantic coast of Morocco by the seventh century BCE, later becoming a Roman colonia. It was renowned for its garum fish-sauce factories and, in legend, was linked to the Garden of the Hesperides and the labors of Hercules. It anchored Rome's Mauretanian province.
