About Little Mountain / Estill’s Defeat Battlefield Site

Little Mountain is associated with the March 1782 battle commonly called Estill's Defeat. James Estill's militia fought a Wyandot force in the Kentucky frontier, where raids and armed pursuit connected scattered settlements to the wider Revolutionary-era struggle for control of the Ohio Valley.

Kentucky marker 153 commemorates Estill's Defeat. A May 2015 photograph places the metal sign at Hinkston and Maysville pikes, while the state's inventory gives US 60. This unresolved location difference does not establish a protected battlefield footprint. Original battle features, creek-side parcels and current marker care need review.

History happened here at Little Mountain / Estill’s Defeat Battlefield Site

Estill and his men pursued a Wyandot force following conflict near their settlement. On March 22, 1782, the opposing groups fought near the Hinkston Creek area. Estill was killed, and the encounter entered Kentucky's frontier histories as a costly defeat for his militia.

The battle illustrates the vulnerability of small settlements and the role of Indigenous forces in frontier warfare. Its later commemoration compresses a moving encounter into a roadside reference. Understanding the site requires separating that marker location from the broader landscape described in historical accounts.
