HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lismore Castle Gardens.
The gardens preserve their walled upper and lower sections dating substantially from the seventeenth century, set beside Lismore Castle, whose current fabric is largely a nineteenth century Gothic remodeling of an earlier medieval structure. Castle and gardens are privately owned by the Devonshire family. The gardens are open to the public on a ticketed, seasonal basis, while the castle interior remains private.
About Lismore Castle Gardens
Prince John, later King John of England, founded a castle at Lismore in 1185 on the site of an earlier monastery. It passed to Sir Walter Raleigh and then to the Boyle family, Earls of Cork, who laid out walled gardens in the seventeenth century. The estate later became a residence of the Dukes of Devonshire.
