Tradition credits the Indian monk Huili with founding Lingyin Temple in 328 during the Eastern Jin dynasty. He chose a wooded valley west of present-day Hangzhou and named the monastery Lingyin, commonly translated as Temple of the Soul’s Retreat. The neighboring limestone height became Feilaifeng, or Peak Flown from Afar, because Huili believed its unusual formations resembled a mountain from India. The foundation joined imported Buddhist learning with a landscape already suited to retreat, pilgrimage, and monastic settlement.

Lingyin prospered and declined repeatedly as dynasties, warfare, fires, and religious policy reshaped the region. It enjoyed major patronage under the Wuyue kingdom in the tenth century, when Hangzhou became an important Buddhist center. During the Southern Song, the monastery ranked among the leading Chan institutions near the imperial capital. Monks taught, copied texts, received pilgrims, and maintained halls and pagodas across a large precinct. None of the present principal timber halls survives unchanged from the fourth-century foundation.

Feilaifeng preserves the site’s most important early physical record. More than three hundred Buddhist sculptures were cut into its caves and cliff faces, principally between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. The carvings range from Five Dynasties and Song figures to a strong group created under the Yuan dynasty, when Tibetan Buddhist imagery became prominent. Guardians, bodhisattvas, arhats, and representations of Budai occupy natural recesses in the rock, documenting artistic exchange among Chinese, Central Asian, and Tibetan traditions.

Lingyin’s buildings suffered severe destruction during the Taiping era in the nineteenth century and additional loss during later upheavals. Major reconstruction in the late Qing, Republican, and People’s Republic periods produced the sequence of halls seen today, including the Hall of the Heavenly Kings and the Great Hall. Their statues and fittings are also largely modern replacements created for renewed worship. The temple therefore preserves an ancient institutional location and continuous religious memory, while its visible architecture is substantially rebuilt rather than original Jin or Song fabric.

The temple remains a functioning Buddhist monastery visited by worshippers as well as tourists, while Feilaifeng is administered as a protected scenic and cultural area near West Lake. Pagodas, inscriptions, cliff sculpture, wooded paths, and reconstructed temple courts together reveal different kinds of authenticity. The rock carvings retain significant medieval material; the halls express repeated restoration of religious use. Visitors should distinguish the founding tradition, the surviving carved landscape, and the much later buildings instead of assigning one date to the entire ensemble.
