HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lightner Museum (former Hotel Alcazar).
The former Hotel Alcazar survives as a Spanish Renaissance Revival building of 1888 commissioned by Henry Flagler, including its onetime indoor swimming pool, now repurposed as exhibition space, and its central courtyard. The building is owned by the City of St. Augustine and operated as the Lightner Museum by a private nonprofit foundation. The museum is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Lightner Museum (former Hotel Alcazar)
The Hotel Alcazar was built in 1888 by Henry Flagler as a luxury resort hotel designed by Carrere and Hastings in the Spanish Renaissance Revival style. It offered one of the largest indoor swimming pools in the world along with casino and recreation facilities for wealthy winter guests. The hotel anchored Flagler's development of St. Augustine as a resort.
