HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Les Baux-de-Provence.
The site preserves the ruined Château des Baux atop a limestone spur, largely dismantled on royal orders in the seventeenth century, with only fragmentary walls, cisterns, and quarried rock faces surviving rather than an intact structure. Full scale replica siege engines have been installed for visitors, and the ruins are managed under a concession granted by the commune of Les Baux-de-Provence. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Les Baux-de-Provence
A fortified settlement grew on this rocky spur in Provence from around the tenth century, becoming the seat of the powerful Lords of Baux. The lords ruled a large feudal domain and claimed descent from the biblical Magus Balthazar, warring often with neighboring counts of Provence. The stronghold was largely dismantled by French royal order in the seventeenth century.
