HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lecce Historic Centre (Baroque).

The historic center preserves an extensive ensemble of baroque churches, palazzi, and civic buildings carved from local pietra leccese limestone, most notably the elaborately decorated facade of the Basilica di Santa Croce, alongside surviving Roman and medieval remains. The buildings are held by a mix of the municipality, the Catholic church, and private owners, with the center protected as a historic urban landscape. The streets and squares are freely accessible, while individual churches and palazzi may charge for entry or restrict visiting hours.

About Lecce Historic Centre (Baroque)

Lecce's historic center took its form in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the city, under Spanish rule, was rebuilt with carved Baroque churches and palaces. Craftsmen exploited the soft local limestone, pietra leccese, to create ornate facades, most famously at the Basilica di Santa Croce. The result made Lecce a major center of Baroque art in southern Italy.
